Word from Jeb!

Wesfel,

I hope to see everyone out tomorrow night for our Interest Finder! :)

And here’s a little something about the Tuesday Bible Studies:

The Bible is a collection of books (66 to be exact) which consists mostly of stories.  Could it be that all these books and stories are really part of one story?  If so then what is that story?  Each Tuesday evening WesFel students will gather at 8:00 to consider the One Story of the Bible.  However, everyone is welcomed.

And here’s a little something about the dinner you missed last week:

Retreat

Each year, we try to go on a retreat to escape the stress of campus and to have a little time to relax and spend a little more time thinking and learning about God’s work. On Friday afternoon, twelve of us left Williamsburg for a brief Wesfel retreat in Matthews, Virginia. There were eight students and four adults. Fortunately, we were able to steal Gini back for a little while and with her guidance we learned more about creation, God’s covenant to us, and other interesting parts of Christian life. Crafting and acting were central in each process! In-between discussion, we had plenty of time for playing cards, kayaking, relaxing, and (in typical Wesfel fashion) eating lots of delicious food.

Thank you to the Partridge family for allowing us to invade their home! Also thank you to David Gates, the Shultes, and Gini for your help and organization throughout the weekend!

The Students!

Piling food on our plates for a fantastic lunch!

Relaxing and Playing Cards!

Enjoying the River!

A few of our fearless leaders!

Medical Ethics and an Update

Thank you to Nelson Reveley for speaking to us about medical ethics this evening! With his help, we had a very interesting and thought provoking program about how ethics plays a key role in modern medicine. We will certainly think twice about our impulses the next time we are faced with ethical issues in health in the future!

We also talked about retreat next weekend and next years council. If you are interested in either, please continue reading the message from Laura copied below.

1. Retreat! Right now we have 7 confirmed. A few people have mentioned interest
in passing but haven’t let me know for sure. Please do so! There’s still time!
For those of you who ARE coming, please try to bring a sleeping bag or blankets
and a pillow.

2. COUNCIL!!! We’re currently putting together the 2012 WesFel Council, and
you’re invited! Members will work with Professor Gates and support our new
moderator, Will Shimer, with a variety of positions. Council as a whole works
to put together weekly programs, social events, and special events for the
group. Please let me know if you are interested in one of the positions listed
below!

Communications- sends out weekly e-mails and keeps an eye on the WesFel website
(we’ll show you how! Computer expertise is unnecessary. If I can do it, so can
you!)

Meals/Adopted Families- current chair Sarah Manoso is looking for a partner to
coordinate weekly meals and the Adopted Families program! People will love you
the most if you take this position.

Social- Plans movie nights/holiday parties/Sno-to-Go runs/mini golf/board game
nights as he or she desires. Fun!

Service- finds out what service opportunities are available through W&M or WPC
or creates their own for WesFel!

Hospitality- sends birthday cards to group members. There’s candy involved.

Programs- works with the WesFel sponsor to coordinate programs, speakers, and
discussions as necessary.

If you’re interested in any of these positions (and you’re not graduating) or
if there’s something else you’d like to bring to the group…do it. Let me
know! So excited!

Much love,
Laura

News from Laura

TONIGHT we are hosting Nelson Reveley, notorious smartypants and bow tie-wearer, and he will be leading a discussion on medical ethics and the value of life. 4:30 in the WesFel room, dinner to follow, not to be missed!

ALSO our retreat is THIS COMING WEEKEND! Our favorite freshly-ordained “teaching elder”/minister, Gini Campbell, will be leading our program on the goodness of Creation and our place in it. Please let us know if you are
planning to attend by TONIGHT, either in person or by e-mailing me. We’ll meet at the church at 5PM Friday for pizza before we leave, and we’ll be back around 4 Saturday. If you would like to come but have to come late or be back a little early, let us know and we can try to make arrangements to get you there! But really, let me know tonight so we can get a head count for transportation/food.

Gini gets ordained!

We are so proud of Gini Campbell! Many of us were present this afternoon to watch her be ordained in the sanctuary. Gini served as Director of Campus Ministries at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church from 2008 until 2011 and is now the minister at Third Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. It was a wonderful ceremony and we all wish Gini the best!

Upcoming Events

Here’s an announcement from our moderator, Laura Murray!

A couple of fun things coming up this weekend:
1. Gini Campbell’s ordination is TOMORROW at 1 in the Sanctuary at WPC. Come on
out to support her hard work and celebrate her new job, even though we miss her
here at WesFel.
2. SUNDAY: We’ll be having a program with Nelson Reveley, our old intern. He’ll
be leading a discussion on medical ethics and the value of life. 4:30 in the
WesFel room, dinner to follow.

AND…even more exciting…our retreat is next weekend! We’ll be meeting for
pizza in the WesFel room at 5 on Friday, Nov 11, then heading out to Sarah
Partridge’s family’s home in Matthews County. Please let us know if you’re
coming by Sunday evening so we coordinate food! Gini will be leading our
program. The purpose of this retreat is to consider the biblical themes of
promise and faithfulness in light of our relationship to creation and to God.
During this retreat participants will study familiar biblical stories about
creation from Genesis and explore their biblical themes. Participants in the
retreat will also focus on ways to celebrate the goodness of creation! You’ll
want to bring a sleeping bag, and we’ll be back Saturday afternoon before
dinner. Get excited!
